Maison Canard-Duchêne has always had a special relationship with its land. It is located between vineyards and forests, in Ludes, on an estate planted with several cedars, maritime pines and giant sequoias that are more than a century old. Thus, we have been anchored in Nature for 150 years, and we defend it with fervor!
The actions of the Canard-Duchêne House…
Beyond the partnership with Reforest'Action, the House is committed to a CSR approach and in particular to the preservation of the environment.
Canard-Duchêne's aim is therefore to limit its impact and protect local flora and fauna. In love with our land, we adapt our way of working on a daily basis:
- Actions for our vines : the House has adopted the Sustainable Viticulture in Champagne (VDC) approach with 100% of its vines certified in 2020! An agroforestry project has also been adopted on the organic plot of Verneuil ZE181 to promote biodiversity and limit the sensitivity of the vine to climatic, environmental and parasitic disturbances.
- Recycling approach : the House revalues the waste linked to the production of champagne. It has set up a deposit system to reduce packaging with specific containers for glass and cardboard.
- More responsible purchasing and production : It is essential for the House to support a responsible purchasing policy that, over time, has a smaller ecological or climate footprint. The House therefore favors suppliers who also have an eco-responsible approach as well as companies producing in France or Europe in order to promote the local economy. In addition, Canard-Duchêne is gradually reducing supplies whose constituents are of fossil origin by using FSC or bio-sourced materials.
- Preservation of natural resources : our washing and rinsing devices have been equipped with water recycling systems for 20 years. With daily laboratory analysis control, our own treatment plant depollutes 100% of effluents.
- Energy conservation : our electricity consumption has fallen by 25% thanks to optimized and diligent monitoring since 2005. The hot water in the vat room is generated by recovering calories from the refrigeration units.
- Promoting biodiversity : Because our fauna and flora make the quality of champagnes, five beehives have been installed in the Domaine's park. Insects, and in particular bees, play a role in the ecosystem since they contribute to the pollination of 80% of flowering and cultivated plant species. On a global scale, the economic value of this action is estimated at 153 billion euros by INRA. Bees therefore contribute to food security. Discover our exceptional honey from the Montagne de Reims!
A major challenge: the preservation of forests
The French company Reforest'Action's mission is to strengthen biodiversity and acts locally for the creation, preservation and restoration of forests throughout the world.
It is important to know that the forest ecosystem is the first carbon sink on Earth.
Forests therefore represent a major challenge in the face of global warming. The latter has already begun to impact vineyards, forcing winemakers to adopt their winemaking methods. For example, many producers are beginning to eliminate malolactic fermentation in order to maintain the freshness of their vintages.
At the end of 2021, we shared with you an Ode to Nature in which we confided our motivations and our ambition for our first reforestation project.
It was a great success and the initial objective of 20,000 trees planted was met and even exceeded!
Naturally, Maison Canard-Duchêne wanted to continue this action which is close to its heart by setting a new target of 40,000 trees for 2023.

…Which are found in our vintages!
When we take care of our land, there is no secret, Nature gives it back to us.
This is where all the magic of the congruence of actions and values lies: it is found in our vintages that you enjoy tasting!
- The Reforest'Action vintage – A testament to our commitment to reforestation, this bottle gives meaning to our actions by raising awareness of environmental issues while promoting our terroir.
- The organic cuvée P181 – Canard-Duchêne has been around for 15 years! “P181 is a unique champagne, a true hymn to Nature. It will surprise you with its elegance, freshness and balance.” Laurent Fédou, Cellar Master.
As our Managing Director Jérôme Durand reaffirms: "We obviously still have a long way to go and the House's teams, across all professions, are mobilized in this commitment and this environmental approach which is part of the long term in a sincere and progressive manner ."
