The Montagne de Reims is one of the most iconic terroirs in Champagne, renowned for its chalky soils and exceptional Pinot Noir. For Canard-Duchêne, established in Ludes, this terroir represents the very essence of the Maison, shaping the style of its champagnes with freshness, balance, and precision. We invite you to explore this remarkable vineyard.
The Champagne Vineyard: A Mosaic of Terroirs
The Champagne vineyard spans five departments—Marne, Aube, Aisne, Haute-Marne, and Seine-et-Marne—covering 319 villages (known as “Crus”) and approximately 34,300 hectares. This diverse landscape of rivers, rolling hills, and varied soils has guided the selection of grape varieties best suited to each area.
Thanks to this diversity, Champagne offers an extraordinary range of styles, each reflecting its unique terroir.
Today, the Champagne region is divided into four main sub-regions : Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs and Côte des Bar.
Each sub-region has distinct characteristics in terms of topography, soil, and subsoil, directly influencing the style of the wines produced. Even the same grape variety can express very different aromatic profiles depending on sun exposure, microclimate, and surrounding environment.
Among these, the Montagne de Reims holds a special place for Canard-Duchêne. Founded in Ludes in 1868, the Maison maintains a deep and enduring connection to this terroir.

Montagne de Reims: A Key Terroir in Champagne
Located at the heart of the Champagne vineyard, the Montagne de Reims stretches in a crescent shape around the city of Reims, spanning nearly 30 km in length and 6 to 10 km in width. This historic vineyard landscape, shaped over 70 million years, reflects a unique harmony between Nature and Human expertise.
Why Is Montagne de Reims So Unique?
Its distinctiveness lies in its exceptional geological heritage. Situated between Reims and Épernay, it forms part of the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park, a densely forested area that contributes to its biodiversity and varied landscapes.
This terroir is further distinguished by its classification of villages:
- Grand Cru villages such as Ambonnay and Bouzy are renowned for producing rich, powerful wines with intense aromatic concentration. Other Grand Cru villages include Verzenay, Verzy, Mailly, Louvois, Sillery, Puisieulx, and Beaumont-sur-Vesle.
- Premier Cru villages, including Ludes and Vrigny, offer a more delicate expression, combining freshness, balance, and refined fruitiness. These villages play a crucial role in Champagne blending. The villages of Bezannes, Chambray, Coulommes-la-Montagne, Éceuil, Jouy-lès-Reims, Les-Mesneux, Pargny-les-Reims, Sacy, Sermier, Villedommange, Villers-aux-Nœuds, Cormontreuil, Chigny-les-Roses, Montbré, Rilly-la-Montagne, Taissy, Trois-Puits, and Villers-Allerand round out the list of villages classified as Premier Cru.
Beyond classifications, these terroirs tell a story—one shaped by geology, time, and generations of winemakers.
Soil, Climate, and Exposure: The Strengths of an Exceptional Terroir
The Montagne de Reims stands out for several defining characteristics that contribute to the quality of its grapes:
- Chalky soils, emblematic of Champagne, act as natural water reservoirs. They retain moisture during dry periods and protect vine roots in winter, while contributing to finesse and tension in the wines.
- Climate plays a fundamental role. Gentle slopes benefit from optimal sunlight and natural drainage, allowing grapes to ripen slowly while preserving acidity and aromatic complexity.
- Diverse exposures and micro-terroirs create a wide range of expressions. Each plot offers subtle nuances, providing Champagne Houses with a rich aromatic palette for precise and balanced blends.

Pinot Noir: The Signature Grape of Montagne de Reims
Champagne production is based on three main grape varieties: Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Meunier. Pinot Noir alone represents 38% of the vineyard and is the emblematic grape of both the Montagne de Reims and the Côte des Bar.
This black-skinned, white-fleshed grape thrives in cool, chalky soils and is highly sensitive to climatic variations. In the Montagne de Reims, it reaches its full potential, expressing richness, structure, and complexity through a powerful yet refined aromatic profile.
As a result, Pinot Noir is a cornerstone of Champagne blends, single-varietal cuvées, and vintage wines. Deeply connected to its terroir, Canard-Duchêne has naturally made Pinot Noir its signature grape, defining the Maison style.
Ludes and Montagne de Reims: At the Heart of Canard-Duchêne’s Identity
Located in the Montagne de Reims, the Premier Cru village of Ludes features around 380 hectares of rolling vineyards on chalky soils, ideally exposed for producing grapes of remarkable aromatic finesse—particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
Founded here in 1868 by Léonie Duchêne and Victor Canard, Canard-Duchêne remains one of the few Champagne Houses still based within the vineyard itself. This unique setting provides an exceptional environment for both production and hospitality.
The estate includes a 2.5-hectare park with centuries-old trees and panoramic vineyard views, carefully maintained to preserve its natural ecosystem.
For Canard-Duchêne, Ludes and the Montagne de Reims are more than a location—they are integral to its history, its style, and its ongoing inspiration.
A Living Heritage to Explore
Through its terroir, landscapes, and vineyards, the Montagne de Reims represents a living heritage, carefully preserved over time. In recognition of this legacy, Champagne was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015 under the “Champagne Hillsides, Houses and Cellars” listing. Since 2023, Canard-Duchêne has proudly served as an ambassador of this heritage.
The Maison welcomes visitors year-round to explore its estate and six kilometers of chalk cellars. These immersive experiences offer insight into Champagne production, the history of the Maison, and guided tastings of its cuvées—an authentic journey into the world of Champagne.
